The aim of the given task was to create a creative, involving and entertertaining scavenger hunt game. The aim was for the group playing the game to learn about the area and at the same time be entertaining. My groups designated area was Bethnal Green. Bethnal Green is a place of history and youth with a lot of museums, galleries and green space. Each member of the group was given an area to visit. My area was to research a shop or supplier of material with application to our pathways. I decided to look into art shops.
Using the internet initially as a secondary resource I looked into art suppliers in the area, which I then visited. On visiting the art shops I chose the friendly art shop Paint Works. Going back to have a group meeting after visiting, I was worried, as the shop was further away then the other areas of Bethnal Green, but realised it may be better to be further as it would make a game more challenging and would enable the other group to see more of Bethnal Green. I wrote my clue as a rhyming poem trying not to give everything away, but by given them a part of the address, I did this as the shop was on the outskirts, I was worried the group may not find it.
As a group the first meeting ran very smoothly in designating areas to each person, I was optimistic but were soon faced with problems as we had a group member leave the university and a general lack of communication in the group. Looking back on the game and having played the other groups game, I saw the lack of communication and lack of research put into our game. I believe we should have spent more time researching and put more effort into creating the scavenger hunt as a game. We could have made the game more interesting and interactive by, communicating with the people in Bethnal Green and by not giving all the clues from the start.
Although we gave all the clues in the start we tried to make them fun by adding things such as puzzles. Each person put effort into decorating the clue cards to match the designated area, but now see more effort could have been put into meeting more as a group to construct the game together rather than working as individuals and just putting the work together.
Overall we tried to balance out the game so that it was not too difficult and frustrating to play and so that it was not too easy. Now I see it may have been slightly on the easy side. If I could go back I would have researched more into scavenger hunts. I believe too much was given away in our clues and the game may have been boring for the other group to play. This project has taught me that in future group work, communication and planning is essential.
